Engaged Community

“An engaged community leads and owns its own development. Communities can be geographic. They can be based on shared characteristics, such as age or gender, or shared interests. They can also be institutional.”

what is engaged community?

To us, Engaged Community looks like listening to our fellow community members and coming together to co-create change in our own communities. It means empowering community members to create their own change in their community.

Engaging in community can take on many forms including:

From the context of re-worlding, we have identified five themes here that we invite you to explore within your own community engagements. These themes are overlapping at the root of change, so when we re-world in one of these themes, we re-world in others.

community initiatives

We invite our meditation practitioners to participate in community through our own initiatives. We partner with local municipality “Adopt a Property” Programs. We adopted a trailhead in Sault Ste Marie and a beach in San Diego.

We humbly acknowledge that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash Peoples; and that we are also located on Robinson-Huron Treaty territory, the traditional lands of the Anishnaabeg, specifically Garden River First Nation and Batchewana First Nation, as well as the Métis People. We acknowledge, honour, and offer deep gratitude and reverence to the people, plant, animal, and land spirits who knew this land we call home long before us, and who will continue to long after. May we be further invited to extend our land acknowledgements into land engagements; may we find ways to support and restore these lands through responsible citizenship, partnership, and advocacy, including the support of landback motions.
